What is Emetophobia?

Fear of Sickness or Emetophobia is an extreme aversion to sick, this can cause enormous distress to the individual. The problem can vary between individuals but it can relate to the act of being actually being sick or being near someone else who is to feeling nausea. It can also transfer to more general issues which cause upset at the thought of sickness, including hearing that someone else was sick.

Symptoms can include:

Avoiding eating certain foods - this may mean having a list of 'safe' foods, or avoiding eating at certain times or days. It may also effect where you eat, perhaps not eating any where other than your own home or where you can see the food and ingredients. This can take a huge toll on your life, additional planning, avoidance and anxiety, and potentially disordered eating.

Work anxiety - there may be anxiety around sharing office space and toilets, kitchen facilities. It can create embarrassment over food choices and trying to hide habits and coping behaviours. There may be additional anxiety if collegues are unwell or you work in a public facing environment.

Avoiding social situations - dinner parties, eating out, social gatherings, public transport, pubic venues are just some of the challenges where fear of vomitting is an issue. Many people avoid drinking too much alcohol or being around drunk people.

Compulsive behaviours - checking use by dates and physical signs of food, checking for signs of illness in yourself or others, cleaning, hand washing, as well as repetitive and negative obsessional thoughts around these behaviours.

How does Emetophobia start?

It is possible that it started at some point due to a bad experience, where sickness was involved either by the indivudal or someone close to them. It doesnt always have to have been an experience it may be learnt from others who dislike being sick or from a general anxiety which transfered into health related anxiety.
